The Automatic Warning System (AWS) is a form of limited cab signalling and train protection system introduced in 1956 in the United Kingdom to help train drivers observe and obey signals.

AWS Indicator

The AWS icon shows up in HUD view to alert players of a warning.

Background[]

AWS is part of the signalling system and warns the driver about the aspect of the next signal through a distinctive loud bell or beeping sound. If the signal is red, yellow or a double yellow than the driver must cancel the warning or else the train will apply the emergency brakes In most cases, particularly in modern units or locomotives, the reverser is also reset.

These warnings are normally given 200 yards (180 metres) before the signal. Information about the signal aspect is conveyed electromagnetically to the moving train through equipment fixed in the middle of the track, known as AWS magnets.
