Forty-five Class 444s were built between 2003-04 by Siemens for express services throughout the South West Trains franchise area. The 444s supplemented and eventually replaced the Class 442s on the Portsmouth Direct Line and South Western Main Line.
Route Availability[]
So far, the Class 444 is only suitable for the Portsmouth Direct Line and as AI traffic on London to Brighton on the South Western lines around Clapham Junction.
The five-car formation and express layout have lent this train to be a stand-in for the Gatwick Express Class 442s, thanks to reskinners, on the London to Brighton route between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria, with peak-time extensions to Brighton.
