Background[]
The EMD F59PH is the first in EMD's "F59" Series of locomotives. Eighty-three locomotives were built from May 1988 to May 1994 and were first introduced by both Metrolink and GO Transit, two commuter railroads in North America. Its 3,000 horsepower and turbocharged, 12 cylinder prime mover offers a top speed of 83mph (133 km/h).
Entering service in 1994, a successor to the F59PH - the F59PHI - was fitted with a turbocharged 3,200hp, EMD 12-710E3 prime mover, giving a top speed of 110mph (177 km/h) with standard gearing. It was notably the first to meet California's strict emission guidelines.
For Train Simulator, the F59PH and F59PHI were developed by Dovetail Games and were released upon the release of Train Simulator 2015 in the Los Angeles Commuter Rail F59PH and the San Diego Commuter Rail F59PH add-on packages. The two are also included in Train Simulator 2015: Steam Edition. The Pacific Surfliner route included a licensed Amtrak F59PHI.
