RailWorks is a train simulation game developed by It is a successor to Rail Simulator, and was released online on 12 June 2009 and in stores on 3 July 2009. RailWorks 2 was released as a free update for existing owners on Steam on 24 Sep 2010. Users need the Steam client and user account to run and activate the game, see Steam FAQ.

Since the game's release, Steam has been used to deliver exclusive routes, locomotives, updates, Rail Simulator content and fixes. Examples include the fictional Fascal & Cottonwood route fom All Aboard and packs of the LMS Jubilees and the GWF 4900 Class locomotives. You will get a lot of locos and routes with the base game already, see default contents, so the addons are only if you like the game and need more things to play with.

People that had 2012 would be upgraded by Steam immediately, but would not get the updated locomotives and the new routes.
