Since the game's release, Steam has been used to deliver exclusive routes, locomotives, updates, Rail Simulator content and fixes. Examples include the fictional Fascal & Cottonwood route fom All Aboard and packs of the LMS Jubilees and the GWF 4900 Class locomotives. You will get a lot of locos and routes with the base game already, see , so the addons are only if you like the game and need more things to play with.
Railworks 4: Train Simulator was released September 20, 2012
People that had 2012 would be upgraded by Steam immediately, but would not get the updated locomotives and the new routes.
